Found footage movies continue to evolve and adapt with technology. But today, I want to look at how Matt Reeves 2008 creature-feature Cloverfield learnt from decades of run-and-gun filmmaking and perfected the subjective video-camera horror genre on a reasonably low budget. Scott Pilgrim vs the World (2010) went from box-office bomb to cult-classic in less than a decade, and is celebrated for director Edgar Wright's unique style - mashing genres together with dynamic set pieces, editing, acting, and music. But there are too many video essays about that, so today I want to highlight another of Wright's overlooked qualities as a director: making a movie shoot fun. S...

Matthew Perry was seemingly a very important formative figure. Perfecting the new-age sarcastic everyman, Perry's Chandler Bing helped form our sense of humour and raised the bar for the quick-witted, vulnerable Friend. But why was he so damn funny? The Social Network (2010) is arguably the best film of the last twenty years, and that's thanks to it's superteam of David Fincher (director), Aaron Sorkin (writer) and Kirk Baxter/Angus Wall (editors). Superbad was right in the middle of Judd Apatow's incredible comedy hotstreak in 2007. Maybe not the most iconic film he's been involved in, it's probably the most influential on both modern high-school comedies, and also launched the superstar careers of at least 4 or 5 now superstars, inluding Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Emma Stone, and Bill Hader. It’s Gutter man!
I thought this video would be about Vince Vaughn
This movie came out when I was the same age as these guys and it HIT HARD. I never noticed it in the cinema, or it wasn't played in my area because at the time I was dabbling in acting in TX, but I saw it in the video store. I watched it, then bought it, then made all my friends watch it. We quoted this movie for a decade!!! This is one of those great films that catches the vibe of a generation. If you were that age, you loved it.
To be fair, the best intro is "We are Sex Bob-omb and we're here to make you think about death and get sad and stuff."
This movie got played on loop in the background before every night I went out, in my single days. I liked Fav in Very Bad Things (98).
This is one of the greatest movies of all time
Love this guy!
Swingers, Clerks and Dazed & Confused carried me through the 90s
The 90s had some crazy actor/writers doing some iconic work.
How do you handle permission with random people being on camera? Are you allowed to just do it, do you need to get everyone to sign something? What if the movie comes out and dirty look bar guy doesn't like that he's in the movie?
what is the movie with the guy with blue blood loosing his head on a urinal?
I loved Swingers and it was a roadmap for a bad break up I had getting over the wrong girl. Major thanks to Favs for making it his way.
Yup. I showed this to my cuz after a bad breakup. He loved it & thanked me for showing it.
You really had me thinking this was about Vince.
excellent. Make your own film. keep it "pure".
Swingers is a classic. Love it.
His movies are money...total money!! lol
Swingers is chicken soup for the man’s soul. Everybody experiences this in one way or another. The movie is so relatable.
That was a great, deep, dive on someone that I knew in some respect. That said, I did not know that Scott Pilgrim did so poorly at the theater. I did not see it until about 5yrs ago. I didn't knew it existed, but what a great film. It is crazy how I knew some many of the cast members. It was a huge ensemble cast.
and than Vince went on to marry a small town farm girl lol
A hooker and a banker. Can't get more "relatable" and "cuter" than that! Oh, wait, the Gary Marshall lowbrow wit is the icing on the crap cake.
Dude made the mcu
Ralph?
I’m surprised you didn’t mention him being on knocked up bro was funny on that movie
He's so money and he doesn't even know it
My name chef
From the thumbnail I thought you were going to talk about Vince Vaughn. Somebody should talk about him actually. What Hollywood is doing to him because he is honest is disgusting.
Why did you put Vince Vaughn on the thumbnail, when this is a video about Fabroueau? Retarded clickbait!
Anyone besides me hearing Skill Up?
Wpuld have listened to another 30min of this. Great stuff 👍
Absolutely trash tv show
I’m not saying he’s not good looking now but Vince Vaughn was extremely good looking then. Also, woah. Was that a diss on Elf showing that when saying he’s not the best? Nah dude, Elf is great. Can’t be dissing it.
Nah love Elf
that's why these movies are still the best to date. the dialogue is the main character not some CGI, explosions left and right and corny conversations .... this is what real cinema is. very little of those type of movies left.... hopefully they will make a comeback so we don't have to watch this CGI shit 24/7.
This was great so interesting I saw swingers well over 20 years ago but never paid attention to any of this really cool!
Jon Favreau stole Chrissy's idea!! (Sopranos reference)
this is great
I was introduced to him in Rudy but started to like him as an actor in PCU
ha- Swingers was a charming little picture when it came out. I remember watching Clerks and thinking it was gross and pretty amateur. Swingers was less crass and I think more interesting. I'm not sure what you mean by "one of the most influential" directors. I'm looking at his IMDB list of projects he directed... ALOT of TV and 6-7 rated movies. He certainly jumped on the industry bandwagons of comic book films and Star Wars, but those franchises are, of course, very conservative formats. So, if you're going to continue this Favreau thing, I'd like you to cite filmmakers he influenced, as I don't think he has much style or flair or originality. I will cede to his interest in film technology, but working for Disney that's going to be shoved down your throat as a "tool" to create things more cheaply, not necessarily more visually interesting. Anyway, sorry for the essay, I did like the video all will click the subscribe button NOW.
I'm not really indicating he has a particularly influential directorial style, I more mean how he's influenced the industry. Mainly: 1. directed Iron Man, which changed the entire movie industry 2. all the technology he popularised while filming Mando/Jungle Book, which is basically the industry standard now
I think the red in Get Out being republican red and indicative of political threat is a big misread. The bad guys are literally white liberals after all. Not covert Republicans, radical liberals. It's arguably the most anti-woke movie ever made. I see Get Out as a condemnation of the white gentrification of the very idea of wokeness and the black lives matter movement for the benefit of their guilty white egos. Peele sees these types of people as the most racist because it's buried deep down under a false attitude of alliance and perverse overappreaction of stereotypical black excellence (athletic excellence)
great vid
This movie is a classic! When I was in the early days on my Navy career, living in Hawaii, these were my friends. We lived this in a sense. We all loved this movie and in a way became our mantra. Lol. Rolled up to parties playing Pick up the Pieces. 😂. Was a fun time in my life. Classic characters and music. Love it.
holy shit i didnt know favrea got so out of shape, I thought he was always that way
Why is the thumbnail Vince Vaughn?
Swingers was so fantastic.
Who's the big winner on UA-cam tonight? You are. Scene it wins!
A lot of movies don’t have plot twists that land for me. Alien, however, was full of them.
Has it been ten years since this fantastic film came out? One of my favorites. Ever.
one of the most influential movies of my college career (the first time around).
Jon is SO money...
the humans NEVER bothered me in pixar movies. not once.
