Found footage movies continue to evolve and adapt with technology. But today, I want to look at how Matt Reeves 2008 creature-feature Cloverfield learnt from decades of run-and-gun filmmaking and perfected the subjective video-camera horror genre on a reasonably low budget. Scott Pilgrim vs the World (2010) went from box-office bomb to cult-classic in less than a decade, and is celebrated for director Edgar Wright's unique style - mashing genres together with dynamic set pieces, editing, acting, and music. But there are too many video essays about that, so today I want to highlight another of Wright's overlooked qualities as a director: making a movie shoot fun. S...

This movie came out when I was the same age as these guys and it HIT HARD. I never noticed it in the cinema, or it wasn't played in my area because at the time I was dabbling in acting in TX, but I saw it in the video store. I watched it, then bought it, then made all my friends watch it. We quoted this movie for a decade!!! This is one of those great films that catches the vibe of a generation. If you were that age, you loved it.

That was a great, deep, dive on someone that I knew in some respect. That said, I did not know that Scott Pilgrim did so poorly at the theater. I did not see it until about 5yrs ago. I didn't knew it existed, but what a great film. It is crazy how I knew some many of the cast members. It was a huge ensemble cast.

that's why these movies are still the best to date. the dialogue is the main character not some CGI, explosions left and right and corny conversations .... this is what real cinema is. very little of those type of movies left.... hopefully they will make a comeback so we don't have to watch this CGI shit 24/7.

ha- Swingers was a charming little picture when it came out. I remember watching Clerks and thinking it was gross and pretty amateur. Swingers was less crass and I think more interesting. I'm not sure what you mean by "one of the most influential" directors. I'm looking at his IMDB list of projects he directed... ALOT of TV and 6-7 rated movies. He certainly jumped on the industry bandwagons of comic book films and Star Wars, but those franchises are, of course, very conservative formats. So, if you're going to continue this Favreau thing, I'd like you to cite filmmakers he influenced, as I don't think he has much style or flair or originality. I will cede to his interest in film technology, but working for Disney that's going to be shoved down your throat as a "tool" to create things more cheaply, not necessarily more visually interesting. Anyway, sorry for the essay, I did like the video all will click the subscribe button NOW.

I'm not really indicating he has a particularly influential directorial style, I more mean how he's influenced the industry. Mainly: 1. directed Iron Man, which changed the entire movie industry 2. all the technology he popularised while filming Mando/Jungle Book, which is basically the industry standard now

I think the red in Get Out being republican red and indicative of political threat is a big misread. The bad guys are literally white liberals after all. Not covert Republicans, radical liberals. It's arguably the most anti-woke movie ever made. I see Get Out as a condemnation of the white gentrification of the very idea of wokeness and the black lives matter movement for the benefit of their guilty white egos. Peele sees these types of people as the most racist because it's buried deep down under a false attitude of alliance and perverse overappreaction of stereotypical black excellence (athletic excellence)
